Essential oils are extd. from umbelliferous plants, such as parsley, carrots, cumin and esp. fennel, by the following process: (a) all or part of the plant is pulled up, mown and/or crushed before the seeds reach complete maturity and when their moisture content is above 40%; (b) the green matter from (a) is beaten in a long horizontal cylinder, turning on its axis and fitted with parallel blades which separate the seeds and parts of the umbrels from the leaves and other refuse; and (c) the seeds and umbrels are treated to extract essential oils, using known methods, e.g. steam distn.. The essential oils are useful in medicine and pharmaceuticals, in agriculture and in industry. The refuse from (b) may be used as an animal feed. The method enables large quantities of plant material to be handled conveniently.
|
