An externally ventilated three-phase alternator having a housing (15) which is arranged between a bearing plate (1) on the drive side and a bearing plate (2) remotely from the drive and in which an annular stator laminate stack (51) is mounted, which carries at least three three-phase windings and is transverse with respect to the alternator shaft (7). The housing (15) consists of an at least approximately cylindrical section (17) having cooling ribs (19) projecting on its outside, and of a prismatic attachment (21) which rests against the bearing plate from the drive side, is covered by an annular casing (65) which is used to guide the cooling air, and on whose side surfaces (22 to 25) which are parallel to the axis the load-current diodes (27, 28, 29, 33) of the alternator are arranged. <IMAGE>
