The refractory lining of an induction melting furnace (1) consists of two components (9,7). The component (9) is a prefabricated crucible which was produced outside the furnace by pressing to shape and sintering a fine refractory powder (SiO2). The component (7) is at first a loose, refractory, coarse-grained lining between the inner surface of the furnace and the crucible (9) and is mechanically compacted, with the crucible (9) partially acting as a mould. Due to the substantial freedom of the crucible (9) from pores and the fineness of the pores which are present, penetration of the molten metal into the crucible material is largely prevented and hence the life of the refractory lining of the melting furnace is extended. The coarse-grained component (7) of the lining also has a buffering function, which increases the resistance of the prefabricated crucible (9) to mechanical stresses. <IMAGE>
