PURPOSE:To read characters with a high precision without reducing the read data picking-up pitch, by arranging a read sensor so that its arrangement direction makes a prescribed angle with the direction orthogonal to the carrying direction of a form. CONSTITUTION:A form feeding table 15 is provided in the form insertion entrance of the main body of a character reader. In this device, a read sensor 4 for reading characters entered on a form is so arranged that the arrangement direction of this sensor 4 makes a prescribed angle theta with the direction orthogonal to the carrying direction of the form shown by an arrow, namely the direction shown by the dot-dash-line. By this arrangement, the reading probability of lines, specially, lateral lines of characters is higher for sampling due to the sensor 4. Consequently, even if the sampling pitch is wider than the width of lateral lines of characters to be read, characters are read with a high precision without increasing the number of sampling bits, namely, the capacity of a read data memory. |
