An automatic adjusting device for an inside-shoe drum brake has a strut comprising two parts (11, 20) screwed together, one of which is provided with a helically toothed region (22) which is in engagement with a similar helically toothed region (25) on an adjusting element (23). Associated with the adjusting element is a clutch in the form of a flange (26) and a ring (28) which cannot normally be rotated, both of which are normally forced into engagement by a spring (29). When the brake shoes wear, an outward movement of the strut has the effect that the strut part (21) is rotated by a relative movement of the helical teeth, the adjusting element (23) being held stationary by the clutch, with the result that the length of the strut increases. The adjusting device ceases to operate when the strut loading is sufficient to move the element (23) counter to the spring (29). The operation of the adjusting device is thus insensitive to loads. <IMAGE>
