In sports halls, especially in multi-purpose halls, long-jump pits are covered by a lid when not being used for long-jump practice and competition, so that their surface area can be used in the same way as the remaining surface area of the hall. To avoid costly cellar construction work and large lifting heights for the trough and lid of the jumping pit, the jumping pit (11) has a lid (14) which can be moved backwards and forwards by means of running rollers (36) attached to its underside, both on the edge (26) of the trough (11) of the jumping pit and on the floor (17) of the hall adjacent to the jumping pit, between a covering position above the jumping pit and an exposure position adjacent to the jumping pit. The lid (14), in the covering position, is lowered together with the trough (11) of the jumping pit by means of the lifting device of the latter into a position of rest flush with the floor (17) of the hall, and is raised to the level of the hall floor to be moved into the exposure position. For the horizontal movement, a displacement device (15) is present which is arranged below the lid (14) next to the trough (11) of the jumping pit and is lowered and raised on a perpendicular guide together with the trough (11) of the jumping pit and the lid (14). <IMAGE>
