The multi-stage production of a machine-readable information carrier, e.g. a personnel identity card, takes place in such a manner that the data carrier layer (10), containing the machine-readable data, e.g. magnetised wires, or a frame (14) immovably receiving this layer, is provided with a first guide device, e.g. guide holes (16,17), and is inseparably enclosed between two cover layers (18,19), which if necessary can be opaque, such that the guide device remains free. The intermediate product obtained in this way can be processed into the finished product by another party, e.g. the individual submitting the order, in that it is inseparably connected, e.g. welded, to the further layers (layer for the optically readable data, the photo, transparent cover layers), whereupon a readout edge is cut in the welded stack in a precisely defined position relative to the machine-readable data by means of a cutter device which contains a second guide device complementary to the first guide device, e.g. guide posts (41,42) which are pushed through the guide holes (16,17). Advantages: Alignment can be controlled even on the intermediate product, reduced rejection, lower requirements on production personnel, possibility of preventing the final-production personnel viewing the machine-readable data. <IMAGE> |
