Apparatus for feeding a web of material from a supply spool 10 towards a drum and cutting the web to form individual sheets that are clamped onto the drum at their head and tail, comprises a head clamp 24 and a tail clamp 26 each defined by a recess in the surface of the drum 22 and one or more clamping members in the recess that lift as the respective clamp passes a load cam 33. Means 14 is provided for advancing the web of material 13 towards the surface of the drum 22 and a guillotine 16 for severing the web into individual sheets. The web advancement means 14 and the guillotine 16 are arranged to operate in timed relationship to the rotation of the drum 22 so that the head and tail ends of the cut sheet register with the head and tail clamps. The dimensions of the surfaces defining the recess and the inclination of surfaces 18 guiding the master material into the head clamp 24 are such that with equal linear speed of the sheet material and peripheral velocity of the drum 22 the leading edge of the sheet material arrives at the bottom of the recess and remains there until the clamping member(s) has (have) closed.
