PURPOSE:The reaction mixture between chlorobenzene and chlorosulfonic acid is washed with water in the presence of a specific solvent, then the solvent and water are distilled off to give the titled compound used as a starting material for polysulfone resins in high yield with no formation of by-products. CONSTITUTION:The reaction between chlorobenzene (1mol) and chlorosulfonic acid (preferably 2.5-4.0mol) is carried out and the resultant reaction mixture is washed with water in the presence of a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent (dichloromethane, chlororform and carbon tetrachloride) to remove sulfuric acid, as a by-product, and unreacting chlorosulfonic acid. Then, water is azeotropically removed from the organic solvent phase to obtain anhydrous 4- chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride. THe process according to the present invention readily gives anhydrous chlorobenzenesulfon ylchloride without hydrolysis. |
