PURPOSE:To enable long-term, stable and continuous operation while dropping the bath voltage by bringing the inactive surface of an electrode into contact with a cation exchange membrane to shorten the distance between both electrodes. CONSTITUTION:One side of each of a cathode and an anode is activated, the other side is inactivated, and the inactive surface of the cathode and/or the anode is brought into contact with a cation exchange membrane or buried in the membrane to unite them in a body. The resulting titled exchange membrane is used in an electrolytic cell for electrolyzing an aqueous soln. of alkali chloride. By supplying an electric current to the cell, gaseous chlorine is generated from the active surface of the electrode which is in contact with the membrane, and gaseous hydrogen and a soln. of alkali hydroxide are produced from the active surface of the cathode. Thus, the cell is stably operated at a low bath voltage over a long time. |
