The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein R1 is C 1-5 alkyl or aralkyl, R2, R3 and R4 are each H or C 1-5 -alkyl; R5=H, C 1-5 alkyl or Ph; and X is Cl, Br or I. These compounds are prepared by reacting together the corresponding 2-halopyrimidine and substituted imidazole. Therapeutic compositions for oral or parenteral administration comprise compounds of the above formula, which have hypoglycaemic properties.
