PURPOSE:To improve the adhesiveness of core and fiber strands and a protecting film by providing an amorphous silicon film on the outside circumferential surface of a glass fiber strand produced by spinning quartz or multicomponent glass by a glow discharge method thereby making said surface resistant to moisture. CONSTITUTION:A glass fiber strand 3 is spun by a double crucible method wherein a multicomponent glass melt 2a for a core is put in an inside crucible 1a and a multicomponent glass melt 2b for a clad in an outside crucible 1b. Said strand is introduced into a reacting chamber 5. SiH4 and a carrier gas are introduced through a gas introducing port 5, and a high frequency electric field is applied between parallel flat plate electrodes 81, 82 by a high-frequency power source 10, by which glow discharge is caused. The glass fiber strand heated to 200-300 deg.C with a heater 9 is formed with an amorphous siliconfilm on the outside circumferential surface and is taken up continuously on a drum 12 in a take-up chamber 11. The resultant fiber retains initial tensile strength (g) and good moisture resistance even after 1,000hr of environmental tests for 90% humidity. |
