1,177,423. Condensation of primary alcohols. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 18 July, 1967 [21 July, 1966], No. 33040/67. Heading C2C. Primary alcohols with a chain branched at position 2 are produced by condensing two molecules of a primary alcohol or a mixture of two or more primary alcohols having the general formula R-CH 2 -CH 2 -OH, in which R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical containing from 1 to 16 carbon atoms, or a mixture of such a primary alcohol or alcohols with an α-branched alcohol containing up to 16 carbon atoms in the molecule, at a temperature of from 80‹ to 220‹ C. in the presence of an alkaline substance soluble in the alcohol and (as a catalyst) a soluble compound of Rh, Ir, Ru, Os, Pd, Pt or a mixture of soluble compounds of these metals, together with (as stabilizer) an organic compound of P, As or Sb, in the trivalent state, having the general formula PR 1 R 2 R 3 , AsR 1 R 2 R 3 , SbR 1 R 2 R 3 or R 1 P(R 2 )-(CH 2 ) n -P(R 2 )R 1 in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are the same or different alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl radicals containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and n is a whole number from 2 to 4. |
