Steel plates are rolled in a reversing mill from elongated rectangular section blanks. To produce straight edges on the rolled plate the geometry of the blank is modified before rolling. The blank is rolled on edge, with varying rolling force, to produce a greater reduction at the centre than at the ends. This is done at least on the longitudinal side faces. The operation may be followed by rolling the major surfaces of the blank to ensure flatness, and by descaling before passing to the reversing mill. The laterial side faces of the blank may also undergo the same treatment. Conventional rolling practice tends to produce "barrelling", giving convex edges to the plan of the plate. These have to be trimmed off and the method described saves the waste of metal.
|
