PURPOSE:To reduce troubles to improve the reliability and improve the efficiency, by making the pipe end detector of a length detecting truck stationary and providing a measurer for rough length of the steel pipe for the purpose of determining the stand-by position of the length detecting truck. CONSTITUTION:In a length detecting device 10 consisting of a reference side detecting device 2, which detects reference-side pipe end positions of steel pipes 1-1'', and a length detecting truck 3 which detects their antireference-side pipe end positions, a pipe end detector 4 of the length detecting truck 3 is made stationary, and rough length measuring devices 11-11'' for steel pipes are provided for the purpose of determining the stand-by position of the length detecting truck 3. For example, three sets of pipe end detectors 4 are provided in carrying height positions of steel pipes 1-1'' stationarily to the length detecting truck 3, and rough length measuring devices 11-11'' for steel pipes 1-1'' where plural steel pipe detectors 11a are arranged at prescribed pitches are provided in stop positions of steel pipes 1-1'', which are carried next, on this side of a running path 12 of the length detecting truck 3. |
