The piano has at least one string of fixed length for each note, which exhibits transverse and longitudinal vibrations. For each string the base frequency of the longitudinal vibrations differs from the base frequency of the transverse vibrations by a given whole number of half-tone intervals. The number of half-tone intervals between the two base frequencies may be the same for each of several neighbouring piano strings, e.g. between 40 and 52 half-tone intervals for each string. Pref. the base frequency of the longitudinal vibrations for each string less than 5000 Hertz. |
