A gas expansion cycle for solar powered generating stations employs compressed CO2 gas to cool the solar elements. Hot gas expands in a gas turbine providing power to drive two sets of centrifugal compressor stages and an electric power generator. Turbine exhaust gas is cooled in a recuperator and compressed in two stages before returning via the recuperator to the solar furnace. Heat is dumped to an external coolant through two coolers, one at each at the gas inlet to the compressor stages. The entire assembly may be mounted within the boiler tower at the focus of the solar mirror array. A storage capacity for hot gas may be incorporated into the circuit, via isolating valves, permitting energy storage to compensate for fluctuating energy collection due to changing cloud cover.
|
