A linearly displaceable casing (1) is mounted with the aid of needle bearings (9) on a threaded drive spindle (7). Main bearing balls (2) are arranged in this casing so as to roll tangentially on only one of the flanks (10, 11) on the thread of the spindle (7), each of these main bearing balls (2) only being in contact with one of these flanks (10, 11). The main bearing balls (2) move in a radial ball bearing (5) which is arranged within the casing with its axis of rotation perpendicular to the direction of the axis of the spindle, which allows the axial clearance to be adjusted. This device allows linear movement of the casing (1) along the spindle (7) rapidly and involving only very little friction, it being possible to this end for the spindle to be fitted with a thread of high slope. This drive device is suitable for uses in which it is desired to give a component a precise linear position, but requiring only relatively modest forces. In order to ensure greater precision, the threaded spindle (7) may be driven by means of a stepper motor. <IMAGE>
