In the crash barrier consisting of a pillar (1) and a guard rail (7) secured thereon, the pillar (1) can be adjusted in length in stages and consists of a profiled steel support (2) and of two profiled sheets (3) bearing on both sides against the web of the support and surrounding the flange edges, which profiled sheets (3) project above the profiled steel supports (2). The profiled sheets (3) are clamped securely on the support by means of two screws (5) passing through the web of the support. The two profiled sheets (3) surrounding the flange edges of the profiled steel support (2) form, above the flange (2a) in the end area projecting above the support (2), a guide groove (8) for a clamping plate (9) arranged therein. A tightening screw (11) is screwed into a threaded bore (10) in this clamping plate for the purpose of clamping the guard rail (7) securely, the said tightening screw (11) extending right through this guard rail (7) from its outside. Also arranged between the guard rail and the two profiled sheets (3) is a counter-plate (12) which the tightening screw passes through and which surrounds the two profiled sheets laterally in a U-configuration. The clamping screwing permits a stepless adjustment of the guard rail in terms of height. The advantage of this crash barrier lies in the fact that, in the event of the carriageway being raised due to the laying of fresh asphalt on the surface of the carriageway, the guard rail can be reset to the prescribed distance above the ground by means of a small number of manoeuvres. <IMAGE>
