NEW MATERIAL:The carbostyril derivative of formulaI[A is lower alkylene; B is CO, CH2C(R<1>)H (R<1> is H or lower alkyl), C(OH)H, or CH=C(R1); R<2> is phenyl having 1-3 halogens, lower alkoxy or lower alkyl as substituent groups on the phenyl ring; Z is N or methyne]. EXAMPLE:7-[3-(4-phenyl-1-piperazinyl)-1-oxopropyl]-3,4-dihydrocarbosty ril. USE:Central nervous system depressant and antihistaminic agent. Especially excellent as a sedative, tranquillizer, and remedy for manic-depressive psychosis. It has no side effects. PROCESS:The compound of formulaIcan be prepared e.g. by reducing and cyclizing the benzene derivative of formula II, and reacting the resultant carbostyril derivative of formula III with the compound of formula IV.
