The invention relates to a device and a method for butt welding plates by means of a laser-beam welding apparatus. To position the plates, first of all one plate (1) is pushed until it bears against a centre stop (10) put into the line of welding and is then clamped in place by the clamping jaws (8, 13). After the centre stop (10) is removed, the other plate (2) is pushed until it bears against the edge of the clamped plate (1), in the course of which the centre stop (10) and one of the clamping jaws (12) can be used for guiding the second plate (2) so that its front edge does not slip over or under the opposite edge of the clamped plate (1). After this positioning, the second plate (2) is also clamped in place. By means of the device according to the invention, reproducible positioning of the welding gap and a very narrow weld during welding are obtained. <IMAGE>
