Mechanism for transferring a workpiece 8b between die stations 2, 3 of a press, comprises a support 1 movable transversely of the die axes and carrying a pair of opposed clamping jaws 21, 31 rotatable about a common axis transverse to the direction of transfer, the extent of rotation being determined by adjustable stops 26, 27. The mechanism is of particular use in a press for forming bolts and nuts in the dies 2, 3 by punches 4, 5 carried by a reciprocating gate. Support 1 has a first pair of spring- biased jaws 9, 10 for transferring a cut-off workpiece 8a, without reversal, to the first die station 2. Thereafter the resulting workpiece 8b is transferred to die station 3 by the rotating jaws 21, 31. The upper jaw 21 is biased downwardly by a spring (24), Fig. 3 (not shown), and carries a gear 15 engaging a rack 16 movable between adjustable stops 26, 27 which determine the extent of rotation of the workpiece, usually 180 degrees. The lower jaw 31, is mounted for free rotation against a thrust bearing (34), Fig. 3 (not shown), or in a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the lower jaw is biased upwardly by a spring (24u) and is also rotated by a rack (16u). In another modification, Fig. 5-7 (not shown), the upper and possibly also the lower jaw may be opened and closed positively by levers such as (38) engaging in tracks in transverse rails (40). In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the upper and lower jaws 59, 66 are carried on the ends of arms 45, 46 secured to shafts 47, 48 forming the transversely movable support. The shafts 47, 48 are rotatable about their axes for opening and closing the jaws. The latter are rotated by gears 53, 60 engaging gear segments 54, 61 pivoted at 56, 62 respectively to the arms 45, 46. The gear segments co-operate with adjustable stops 58, 65 for varying the extent of rotation. Only the upper jaw need be moved vertically and rotated positively. In a further embodiment, Fig. 12, the support 1 is reciprocated transversely of the die axes by a double-acting compressed air motor 88. The upper jaw 113 is rotated by a vane type compressed air motor (120), Fig. 13, 14 (not shown), and is moved vertically by a piston (117). The structure 1 is connected to two rods 97, 98 passing through the gate 93, 94 so as to be withdrawn thereby away from the dies 2, 3 to facilitate rotation of the workpiece. Adjustable stops 103, 104 determine the normal position of the structure. In a modification, Fig. 15 (not shown), the upper jaw (129) is rotated by a nut (132) engaging a helical thread (130) on the jaw which nut is raised and lowered by a lever (136) actuated by opposed compressed air motors (140) (141) controlled by a vane (144), Fig. 16 (not shown).
