PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as plastic raw materials, etc. from raw materials at a generally stabilized reaction rate, by specifying the moisture concentration in formic acid solvent and reaction temperature in oxidizing p-tolualdehyde with a peroxide in the formic acid solvent. CONSTITUTION:p-Tolualdehyde of formulaIis oxidized with a peroxide, e.g. performic acid of formula II or hydrogen peroxide of formula III, in formic acid solvent with 3-15wt% moisture concentration based on the formic acid, at 50-150 deg.C to give p-cresol of formula IV useful as industrial raw materials or intermediates for medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc. industrially and advantageously. The p-tolualdehyde may contain the o- or m-isomer, and preferably synthesized by the oxidation of p-xylene or carbonylating reaction of toluene. In this case, the p-cresol having the retained purity of the raw material isomer is obtained. |
