The liq. crystal compn. having positive dielectric anisotropy comprises >= 1 nematic liq. crystal material and a pleochroic dye(I; Y = NH2, NO2, OH, Cl, F; Q = II, III; (S-Q) is present only in>=1 of positions 1,4,5 and 8; R= CH3, OCH3, H; R',R" = H, nonionic substitutent; m = 0-2; n = 1-4; m+n = <=4; when Q is II, then n = 2, m = 0 and S-Q is present only in positiions 1 and 4, and 5,1 and 8,4 and 5 or 5 and 8). Pref. pleochroic dyes are 1,5-bis(phenylthio)-anthraquinone, 1,5-bis(thioethoxybenzothiazinyl)anthraquinone, their stereoisomers and their mixts. The compn. are used in electro-optical devices.
