The electric motor is designed to prevent damage if the motor is over-loaded, by reducing the current in the event of the motor stalling. The motor(10) of the squirrel cage type, has a stator(12) & a rotor(14), with a main winding(24), on the stator pole-pieces(16,20) & an auxilially winding(30) on pole-pieces(18,20). The main winding is connected in series with a capacitor(28) across the AC supply(26) while a 2nd capacitor(32) may be connected in parallel with the 1st capacitor through a centrifugal switch(34) to increase the starting torque. The capacitor value is large enough to supply current to drive the stator magnetic core into saturation during each half cycle of the AC.
