A sonic or ultrasonic welding tool comprises a vibratable solid horn 16, preferably made of aluminium or titanium, and abutment means 54, 60 mounted on the horn in vibration-isolating relationship therewith and serving to limit the depth of penetration of the horn 16 into a workpiece by abutting a surface of that workpiece. As shown, the abutment means comprises a first sleeve 54 mounted on the horn 16 by O-ring gaskets 50, 52 and a second sleeve 60 telescopically arranged within the sleeve 54 and disposed about the horn 16 in proximity the working tip 20 thereof. A spring 66 acts between the sleeves 54, 60 to urge the sleeve 60 axially of the horn towards the workpiece. During welding, the axial movement of the sleeve 60 relative to the sleeve 54 against the spring 66 is limited by an adjustable ring 76 threaded on to the sleeve 60 to limit the depth of penetration of the tip 20 into the workpiece. Air flow may be introduced into the gap between the sleeve 60 and a horn portion 44 to provide cooling of the horn and to accelerate hardening of the softened thermoplastic material of the workpiece. |
