Retarding or spreading the germination time of seeds in growth media, comprises coating the exterior of the seeds, before placing in the growth media with an agent which inhibits the migration of water through the seed tegument. Pref. the seeds are coated with a varnish, such as a glycerophthalic varnish, by soaking the seeds in the varnish or by spraying with the varnish. The coating operation may be repeated to give several layers of varnish. The seeds may be coated with an agent which keeps a supply of air round the seeds, prior to coating with the varnish. Used to control the speed of germination of seeds. A typical application allows hybrid maize grains and pure line maize grains, having different germination periods, to be sown and to germinate simultaneously, by coating the faster germinating grain (usually the hybrid) with the varnish. This allows simultaneous flowering of the male and female plants and easy prodn. of (double) hybrids.
|
