TREATMENT OF SULFUR COMPOUND IN GAS

PURPOSE:To convert sulfur compounds in gas to SO2 in extremely high conversion, by bringing a sulfur compound-containing gas into contact with a solid catalyst for oxidation in the presence of oxygen. CONSTITUTION:A gas such as a gas after a reaction in Claus furnace, containing a small amount of sulfur compounds, e.g., H2S, COS, etc., which is not converted into sulfur with ease by a well-known method, is brought into contact with a solid catalyst for oxidation at >= about 200 deg.C in the presence of oxygen. The sulfur compounds are converted into SO2 in high conversion nearly 100%. This process is also applicable as a process after the reduction of SO2 with solid carbon or a process after the reduction followed by a reaction in Claus furnace.
