In an electromagnetically actuated clutch or brake without a slip ring, having a clutch body which comprises a front plate (2) provided on a drive shaft and having a concentric clutch sleeve (3) attached at the rim, opposite which body is arranged an armature disc (4), magnetically separated pole surfaces (8, 9) being provided in the edge region and in the inner region of the front plate, it is proposed that, to separate the pole surfaces, rectilinear grooves or slots (12) be arranged in the front plate, the said slots extending along the sides of a square, rectangle or polygon and their depth corresponding to at least the thickness of the front plate (2). Economical series manufacture is thereby made possible since because of the straight course of the grooves (12), the clutch bodies (1) can be arranged and machined one after the other. <IMAGE>
