A device for dip-phosphating of metal surfaces with a phosphating solution in a bath, in which sludge is formed as a by-product and precipitated on the bottom during operation, is described which contains the following elements: a) a bath which has at least one recess at the bottom for accumulating the sludge, b) an injection device for generating a flow of the phosphating solution, sufficient for transporting the sludge precipitated on the bottom to the recess and to accumulate it therein, c) a number of baffles which are fitted near to the bottom but above the flow and form passage routes for the flow, so that the deposited and accumulated sludge is prevented from being whirled up and finely redistributed, the baffles being arranged at angles of not more than 90 DEG relative to the direction of flow, and d) a discharge device for discharging the sludge accumulated in the recess from the latter. When using such a device, the dip treatment of metal surfaces can be carried out continuously in the bath, while the sludge arising as a by-product is effectively removed from the bath and the metal surfaces are phosphated in an advantageous manner without the disadvantageous influences of the sludge.
