Electrochemical element containing sulphur dioxide as the cathode depolariser

An electrochemical element is proposed which contains an anode made of metal which is able to reduce sulphur dioxide, an inactive, porous, electron-conducting cathode which is previously polarised on the anode side to a potential of 4.5-4.7 V with respect to a lithium electrode, and a non-aqueous electrolyte which contains sulphur dioxide as the cathode depolariser and at least one aprotic organic solvent having a donor number of 20-50 and a salt which is inactive with respect to sulphur dioxide and the anode metal.
