The invention relates to a casting method and a casting mould arrangement for the casting of large metal parts, such as ingots and the like, the aim being to avoid the formation of sink holes on the free surface. For this purpose, a hood is, according to the invention, placed on the open end of the mould, and provided in this hood is a diaphragm which intercepts the radiant heat emitted by the surface of the metal and reflects it back onto the latter. It is advantageous here if a reflector or a series of baffles is provided behind the diaphragm to ensure that the heat radiated from the rear side of the diaphragm is reflected back onto it. The hood can have cooling arrangements for the reflective surface and devices for producing a vacuum in the casting mould arrangement. Insulation can furthermore be provided at the upper end of the casting mould to prevent heat dissipation. Finally, it is possible to provide devices which allow the supply of heat to the free surface of the casting. <IMAGE>
