Mud flaps arranged behind the tyres of automobiles, in particular passenger cars, can be adapted to the particular loading situation of the motor vehicle by the flap, which forms the mud flap, being composed of a plurality of parts which are releasably connected to one another. The releasable connection can take place, for example, via press studs or clips, and the number and design of the individual parts is governed by the spring strength and the anticipated loading of the individual motor vehicle. By virtue of a simple release or attachment of a part or plurality of parts, the mud flap can thus be shortened or lengthened and, as a result, the annoying and damaging grazing of the mud flaps against the underlying surface, i.e. in particular the road, is done away with. <IMAGE>
