The invention relates to a device for recording the quantity of damping medium in offset printing machines. During the measurement, light at a particular wavelength is radiated onto the surface of the measurement location and received again at two different angles. The proportion of light received at the reflection angle is dependent on the quantity of damping medium, according to the invention the measurement being taken on a roughened surface. The proportion of light received at a different angle of about 90 DEG reacts to changes in roughness of the surface of the object measured, but not to changes in the quantity of damping medium. It is thus possible to recognise wear phenomena at an early stage without false measurements of the quantity of damping medium occurring.
