In the thermal treatment of waste water sludge, the pressure is increased high enough so that no gas separation takes place during conditioning and the resulting gases remain dissolved in the sludge, so that the pH of the sludge is decreased. To separate off gas, the pressure is then somewhat reduced at a roughly constant temperature. Because of the absence of gas separation in the conditioner-reactor (20), a plurality of vertical tubular reactors (18), connected one after the other, can be used. A pressure-reducing means (21) in the form of a throttle valve is connected between the conditioner-reactor (20) and a downstream gas separation vessel (22). <IMAGE>
