Heat exchangers are essentially composed of piping systems spirally nested in each other, through which flows a cooling medium. The medium to be cooled is pumped through cavities lying between the piping systems. The media strand formed in this case is therefore relatively intensely cooled only at the outer layers by heat exchange with the piping systems, while the interior of the media strand is only insignificantly cooled, since a direct heat exchange with the piping systems does not take place. To increase the degree of cooling action, according to the invention the heat exchanger is formed from a multiplicity of box-shaped chambers lying one above the other with shared intermediate bases and one vertical partition each, the chambers having reversing channels at the end to connect to the next chamber but one in each case. The medium to be cooled is thus continuously intensely deformed on flowing through the heat exchanger, so that no temperature gradient within the media strand can result. The heat exchanger according to the invention operates with a high efficiency without use of stirrers, which must be driven, with favourable structural dimensions and simple construction. <IMAGE>
