The invention relates to a process for generating gas from carbonaceous fuels in a iron bath reactor. According to the teaching of the parent application P 3,031,680.4, the gases generated in the molten iron of the reactor are extracted in the reactor space above the melt by oxygen blown onto the bath surface of the iron bath reactor, entrained to the bath surface and partially burned, the heat generated being transferred to the molten iron. According to the invention, molten iron (crude iron) is additionally produced simultaneously with the gas generation, by feeding iron, at least partially in the oxide form, for example as ore, to the iron bath reactor. In a further development of the invention, it is proposed to utilise the coal gas generated in the iron bath reactor for the prereduction of ores and to feed the thus prereduced ores to the iron bath reactor for the production of iron.
