A test unit for detecting occult blood is described and is produced by impregnation of a substrate with an organic peroxide, a chromogen, a buffer and a stabiliser in the form of at least one compound of the general formula: <IMAGE> in which m is an integer from 1 to 5, R<1> is a methyl radical, a short-chain alkoxy radical, a halogen atom or a hydrogen atom and X is a radical of the formulae <IMAGE> with R<2> and R<3> each equalling an alkyl radical with 1 or 2 carbon atom(s), <IMAGE> in which m, R<1>, R<2> and R<3> have the stated meaning, R<4> is an alkylene radical with 1 to 6 carbon atom(s) and n = 0 or 1, <IMAGE> in which m, R<1> and R<4> have the stated meaning, or <IMAGE> in which R<2> and R<3> have the stated meaning.a
