<p>Anti-fouling compositions suitable for use as algicides and/or barnicides contain one or more iridoids derived from plants of the genera Plumeria, Allamanda or Nerium of the family Apocynaceae. Particularly active iridoids are compounds of general formulae I and II, <IMAGE> especially (in the case of I) wherein R<1> is N and R<2> is CH3 or R<1> is CH3 and R<2> is H and (in the case of II) wherein X is a glucosyl, an acetylated glucosyl or a benzoylated glucosyl group and R is an acetyl or a benzoyl group or a group of general formula III <IMAGE> wherein Y is a hydrogen atom, an acetyl, a benzoyl, a glucosyl, an acetylated glucosyl or a benzoylated glucosyl group. The compositions may be in the form of paints which are preferably applied to aquatic structures by spraying.</p> |
