Butadiene, styrene and unsatd. acrids are polymerised in emulsion by first polymerising 30 to 50% by wt. of butadiene with 70 to 50% of styrene in an aqs. alkaline emulsion up to a transformation figure of 75 to 97% (pref. 85 to 95%), then adding a mixture of 10 to 50% of an unsatd. acid, 90 to 50% of styrene and 0 to 40% of butadiene, the concn. of unsatd. acid being 0.2 to 5% of the total weight of monomers, then continuing the polymerisation in acid media up to a transformation value above 96%. The preferred unsatd. acid is (meth)acrylic acid. The emulsions have good stability and pigment binding properties. |
