PURPOSE:To recognize a printed letter and a manuscript, based on a parameter reflecting the difference between the printed letter and the manuscript, by picking up strokes of individual characters and discriminating the types of characters from the number of strokes. CONSTITUTION:A binary pikcture element signals obtained at the scanning of an original is stored sequentially in a buffer 10. A character cutout circuit 11 counts the number of black picture elements are each main scanning line from picture elements of the buffer 10 and cuts out a character lines. An output of the character cutout circuit is applied to a stroke pickup circuit 12 and parameter calculation circuits 14, 15 and 16. The stroke pickup circuit 12 detects end points and cross points of a character picture to pick up strokes. An output of the stroke pickup circuit is applied to a printed letter/manuscript discrimination circuit 17 through a character type discriminating circuit 13 together with the result of parameter calculation. A discrimination circuit 17 recognizes printed letters and manuscripts. Thus, the character recognition of an original mixed with printed letters and manuscripts can accurately be performed. |
