[Also in Division B5] To improve the mixing and plasticization capabilities of a single screw extruder, the machine comprises at least one pair of mixing rings, one member 16 of the pair being connected to screw 11 for rotation therewith and the other member 26 being fixed to barrel 7. Each ring is longitudinally slotted to form peripheral teeth 23, 29 (see also Figs. 3 and 5, not shown), with preferably the rings of each pair having differing numbers of slots. The positions of the teeth (see also Figs. 4 and 6, not reproduced), are longitudinally asymmetric with regard to their respective rings 16 and 26 so that four longitudinal displacements between teeth 23 and 29 are possible by reversal of one or both rings. The longitudinal displacement may also be varied during running of the machine by axial movement of screw 11 derived from a hydraulic piston and cylinder (45, 46), Fig. 1 (not shown). The barrel 7 and extrusion nozzle may be electrically heated and the former may be cooled by blowers in the event of overheating. The Screw 11 may be heated by passage of oil therewithin. |
