Paraformaldehyde prodn - by polymerisation of formaldehyde in aqs soln with water - soluble guanidine salts as catalysts

A commercially available 37 - 40% aq. soln. of formaldehyde is polymerised with the aid of a water-soluble salt of guanidine or a derivative thereof, and a weak acid, as catalyst. Guanidine carbonate is suitable. The process avoids lengthycrystallisation of the product.
