In order to overcome corrosion and strength problems in plate-shaped heat exchanger elements which consist of channel plates produced by rolled welding from aluminium or an aluminium alloy, a method is proposed to enable pipes made from a corrosion-resistant material to be inserted into the channels. In a first variant method, the starting point is a two-layer, partially welded plate section having straight, strip-shaped, unwelded regions which are widened to form ducts mechanically by driving in a tool and into which tubes made from a corrosion-resistant material are subsequently inserted in conjunction with additional widening. In a second variant method, the starting point is a U-shaped plate which is widened in a manner known per se by means of a fluid pressure medium and whose duct system consists of a plurality of straight ducts arranged parallel to one another, and of transverse ducts connecting said straight ducts at the ends, from which the regions with the connecting transverse ducts are separated and pipes made from a corrosion-resistant material are inserted subsequently into the straight ducts - accompanied by additional widening. <IMAGE>
