OXYGEN SENSOR

An oxygen sensor comprising a ceramic substrate, a porous thick film (20) of transition metal oxide, thick films (14, 16) of metal electrodes, and a ceramic protection layer (22) covering these thick film layers. Since the transition metal oxide and metal electrodes are thick films and the protection layer is formed by means of a plasma spray coating process, the oxygen sensor has mechanical durabilty. In addition, the rapid diffusion of gas into the interior is permitted due to the porous structure so that electric resistance changes quickly in response to the partial pressure of the oxygen in the gas. This oxygen sensor is quite suitable for detecting the amount of oxygen in automotive exhaust gas.
