A compression-proof fuel tank of a generally ellipsoidal shape for fitting into the space provided for the spare wheel in normal motor vehicles comprises two curved shells (1, 2), which are welded together on their outer edges and are connected together by a coaxial pipe (3) acting as tie rod. The pipe (3) has perforations (5a, 5b), so that its internal space forms a part of the utilisable tank capacity and at the same time defines the maximum filling height (14) in the tank. The pipe (3), which may comprise two sections (3a, 3b) bolted together, is welded by its lower end on the inner wall of the bottom shell (1), whilst on its upper end it is welded into a central bore (4) provided in the upper shell (2). A cover (6) recessed inwards in the pipe (3) in relation to the profile of the upper shell (2), carries the filling, discharge and measuring fittings (7), which are protectively accommodated inside the space, which is defined by the cover (6) and that part of the pipe (3) lying outside the latter. <IMAGE>
