In accordance with the method for controlling automatic switching off and restarting of an engine, automatic switching off of the engine takes place under first predetermined conditions and automatic restarting of the engine under second predetermined conditions. The fulfilment of the first and of the second predetermined conditions is determined by a control circuit which is fed measurement signals from various measurement probes and sensors. An automatic engine switch-off/restart function can be set and cancelled. If during the automatic restarting of the engine in the set state of the automatic engine switch-off/restart function a predetermined time period has passed from the time of the generation of a start signal for starting the engine to the time of the restarting of the engine, the automatic engine switch-off/restart function is cancelled after the engine has started again and it can rotate without support from the starter.
