The electric upsetting device, which is intended, in particular, for cylindrical workpieces, has a first electrode (anvil electrode) which strikes against one end face of the starting material to be worked, a second electrode, which is in contact with another part of the starting material to be worked, a forming punch arranged between the anvil electrode and the second electrode, and a heat-resistant electrical insulating layer which covers the inner surface of the forming punch. The base surface of the forming punch is formed by the anvil electrode. A current is passed across the two electrodes and the entire portion to be worked of the starting material is softened sufficiently by resistance heating to permit the forming of a workpiece. The end of the formed workpiece can be completely solid. Ceramic is preferably used as the heat-resistant insulating layer. <IMAGE>
