For shutting off cylinders when a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is at partial load, the injections are suppressed in a cyclical sequence for all cylinders. For this purpose, the injection valves are each shut off for one working stroke respectively by the interaction of a signal, which marks the inlet closing of the inlet valves, and a load-dependent signal. The inlet-closing signal is assigned to the associated cylinder in a synchronising device and, together with the load-dependent signal, fed to a control generator, which is connected to the D-flip-flop storage elements, which control the injection valves respectively assigned to them by way of suppression switching stages.
