1511345 Manufacture of nitrated aromatic compounds GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 20 May 1975 [8 July 1974] 21479/75 Heading C2C A process for making selected mononitro and dinitro aromatic compounds comprises contacting an aromatic compound selected from diphenyl, diphenyl methane, dibenzyl, benzophenone, diphenyl sulphone, diphenyl ether, benzene, phthalic anhydride and N-methylphthalimide with nitric acid having a concentration of from 90 to 100% and sulphuric acid having a concentration of from 80 to 100%, with agitation, in methylene chloride at - 20‹ C. to 45‹ C., any thus obtained dinitrated dinuclear aromatic compounds containing only one nitro group on each aromatic nucleus. Typically at least one mol of nitric acid may be used for each mol of mononuclear aromatic compound and for each 0À5 mol of dinuclear aromatic compound. |
